Picasso Museum

A key area for understanding the Pablo Ruiz Picasso in his early creative period for the first time opened its door to Barcelona´s visitors in 1963. Is located in the district of La Ribera and through more than 3800 artworks here at one point highlighted the genius artist. The original idea to establish a museum of Picasso's artwork became from his life's friend and personal secretary Jaume Sabartés. During their friendship Picasso gave to Sabartés a serie of drawings, prints and paintings. Sabartés first thought about establishing a museum in the birthplace of Picasso, in Malaga, but Picasso himself suggested Barcelona because of his whole life relationship with this city has been profound. When the museum opened in 1963, formed its collection of 574 artworks devoted to Sabartés, part of the artworks, which over the years Picasso devoted to Barcelona and only a tiny number of private collections. After the Sabartése death in 1968, Picasso himself donated a further least a thousand artworks, primarily from his early creative period. It was a textbook, academic and work sheets, which are closely associated with his "blue" period.

Picasso Museum has undergone several reconstructions and gradually expanded exhibition space. In early 2008, expanded to an incredible collection of Picasso's 3500 artworks. The aim of the present museum management is to be a space for learning and found a new approaches for collections of this visual genius.
